ELECTION YEAR WORSHIP LEADING

Every. Four. Years.

Conversations with good friends that I worship alongside in local church – I hear:

“I’m the ONLY conservative in our church and everyone probably hates me for what I believe, I don’t feel safe. Everyone else feels differently than me. I’m gonna hide out for a minute.”

12 minutes later I talk to someone else (from the same church):

“I’m the ONLY liberal in our church and everyone probably hates me for what I believe, I don’t feel safe. Everyone else feels differently than me. I’m gonna hide out for a minute.”

These conversations literally happen in every election cycle.

It might not be true in your context, but in our small southern USA church and most churches I’ve visited, the political affiliations split similarly to the national average. Truth is you are most likely not alone and many others in that room are in your political lane.

Division at all costs is the plan of the adversary. Isolation is easy, but costly.

Worship, when led well, will make space for all. Our sung lyric, spoken creeds, scripture, and communion table are meeting places for the faithful and the curious on every political side.

It’s an honor to be leading in the role that welcomes EVERYONE to experience and worship God. I love being the announcement of His radical, upsidedown kingdom!

We can all repent.
We can all look to God and exalt Him.
We can all consider each other greater than ourselves.
We can all come to the table of communion to receive a gift.

Should we ignore political anxiety as worship leaders? No. But we should never add to it, certainly not from the stage and ideally not off of it. Gather the people, all the people.
